This month we’re featuring Bridge Street Market, a neighborhood grocery store on Grand Rapids’ West Side. One of the things our team loves about Bridge Street is its commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs, business owners, and artisans (which you’ll read about below). Many of our friends sell at Bridge Street, bringing fresh and affordable products to our neighborhoods. Here’s our interview with Daltyn Terpstra, the marketing manager at Bridge Street Market:
What makes Bridge Street Market unique compared to other markets and grocery stores?
Bridge Street Market isn’t just a grocery store, we’re your local grocery store with over 4,000 local products to shop! At Bridge Street Market, you can find exactly what you’re looking for at everyday low prices, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, pantry staples, and household basics.
How many local farmers and artisans does your store purchase from?
We are really proud of our selection of local products – and work really hard to make sure it grows! We carry more than 4,000 unique Michigan-made products on our shelves at Bridge Street Market, from coffee and tea to chips and specialty cheeses.
How is it decided what local retailers the market offers?
Our team chooses! We are constantly learning of new products being made in Grand Rapids and Michigan, whether it be a request from a loyal shopper or something new we’ve tried. We bring in the best of the best for our shoppers so they can support local producers. We love when we are able to source new products or specialty items for our community to meet a need not met elsewhere. If shoppers have feedback about our selection or wish to see a specific product on our shelves, we’re eager to know and work hard to meet those needs!
How was the concept for this style of market thought of?
The purpose of Bridge Street Market was to bring quality food at everyday low prices to the downtown Grand Rapids area with a focus on fresh produce, local products, and value-driven pricing.
Favorite coffee drink to sip on from Tillie Ruth's?
Oh man! It changes with the seasons, honestly! During the summertime, we love their smooth cold brew, and this fall, we’re sipping on seasonal lattes like the Fall in Love made with warming spices like allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
What is your favorite feature of the market?
Another tough one! It sounds cliché, but our best feature is our team members and our local shoppers. We are so grateful to be part of “the West Side” Grand Rapids community and truly couldn’t have asked for a better place to be planted. For a physical feature, a favorite of everyone is our exterior fruit-inspired mural done by a local artist before we opened in August 2018!
